Ultrabook sites are currently a dream for many users. Even those with better wages consider that these next generation laptops are quite expensive. At least in terms of satisfaction, but we believe that they are worth every penny. Toshiba Portege Z830 complies with elegant line and defines the "ultrabook" category, has an excellent configuration for increased productivity, especially if you deal with massive editing movies and photos.

Design

Toshiba Z830 is attractive from any angle you look from the overall look and with aluminum finish to characterize the shell, backlit keyboard and matte screen easy to decipher even when you're on the beach, the sun.

This beauty is also fragile. And here we refer to the constitution of the slim laptop (16 mm thick, 1.12 kg). Frame surrounding the display is loose, and this is most noticeable at the bottom of the screen, where there might be a crack every time you flex it.

The interfaces placed on the sides provide the possibility to connect to the internet via LAN (when you don't want or WiFi is not available) and the TV VGA or HDMI. For USB peripherals, we have two USB 2.0 ports and one USB 3.0. Finally, SD card reader is currently on duty, as well as the 3.5 mm jack (sound playback and microphone).

An extra feature, specific for business devices is the digital fingerprint scanner, positioned between the two click buttons below the trackpad. And below, at the far lower status we have LEDs (charge indicator, power, connections, LED activity SSD's).

Performance

For photo and video editing, the Core i5-2557M processor is more than enough. Convert batches of three HD clips (reduced bitrate setting), each about 200 MB, was achieved in less than 10 minutes.

In synthetic tests, results were also lovely, except for where the graphics chipset Intel HD that did not perform too great (of course, could not raise claims of such a solution, those who choose such configuration should be aware that is not a portable gaming intended).

The full HD video playback has absolutely no problem, the CPU load factor is not exceeding 35% and the average is somewhere at 20%.

Screen, although excellent in terms of mate surface (I think is the only one from the ultrabook market), no contrast and no visible angles to give you back. Unfortunately, we do not have anything to compare it with. It is true that glossy screens have vibrant colors and good brightness, but are only good in the dark or in low light.

The ventilation is excellent thought, the computer gets hot very little even when cast in benchmarks.

Autonomy

Its 47 Wh battery provides excellent autonomy for this ultrabook. Over three and a half hours past with HD video playback (Wi-Fi off, Balanced profile, 80% brightness) and four and a half hours past in working on Office, Wi-Fi on, 80% brightness).

Pluses and minuses:
  •  Thin and light (16 mm thick, 1.12 kg);
  •  Excellent multimedia configuration (including video editing);
  •  SSD fitted to provide access and loading times are very good;
  •  Matt screen, although it excels in contrast and color, allows you to work comfortably in any lighting conditions;
  •  LED illuminated chiclet keyboard;
  •  Fingerprint scanner for enhanced security;
  •  Three USB ports (2 x USB 2.0, 1 x USB 3.0);
  •  Great autonomy.
  •  Construction leaves a bit to be desired.
