Sony VAIO Z – ultra-portable performance, reinvented

The word innovation should be used carefully when talking about portable computer market. There are many differences between device manufacturers and results are mostly cosmetic. Sony has managed to come this year with a new concept for the admiral ship from laptop segment. VAIO Z laptop has become a modular and includes a cutting-edge technology in a format not used by any other manufacturer.

An innovative concept

Sony VAIO Z – ultra-portable performance, reinvented

In April this year has appeared on the Internet a picture with a very thin Sony VAIO laptop. At that time no one knew and no one suspected that it was the successor of Sony VAIO Z from a high-performance of ultra-portable. The slim profile was not enough for an Intel Core i7 and a separate video card. The manufacturer, however, prepared us a real surprise.

Engineers at Sony have gone from the premise that a top ultra-portable should be easy and thin to provide a good range with high processing power when needed. All this could not be obtained in a single device without a series of compromises. As the thickness, weight and autonomy were affected by separate video card, the Sony decided to remove it from the carcass. So it appeared Power Dock Media module that includes the dedicated video card, optical drive and a series of connectors. Its place is in the office, where it is assumed that the user needs high processing power. Otherwise, the integrated video card and a high-performance processor are excellent for travel.

The need for new technologies

The solution found by Sony to provide performance and portability at the same time, it is elegant, but could not be implemented without new technology. A few years ago, Intel announced the Light Peak, a method using the fiber optic data transfer. The world already began to see USB cables replaced with much faster, but the years have passed and the implementation of technologies is wonderful.

Apple was the first to adopt Light Peak. The Thunderbolt connector offers a bandwidth of 10 Gbps in both directions simultaneously chosen as the specific DisplayPort jack. Thunderbolt introduction was controversial, especially if we consider that to connect a MacBook with a compatible cable costs $49.

Sony will need a data transfer technology with high bandwidth to connect the Media Dock Power and Light Peak. But its implementation is totally different. The Dock connects to your laptop via a USB 3.0 cable and a connector that uses the power supply, the portable dock is powered when connected. This explains the fact that in the Sony VAIO Z's box are two feeders: one small, ultra-portable and only one bigger that connects to Power Media Dock.

Controversial construction

Sony VAIO Z – ultra-portable performance, reinvented

The Sony VAIO Z laptop is 13.1", with a thickness of 17 mm, which has integrated a processor running at 2.7 GHz. In Turbo Mode, Core i7-2620M's frequency reaches 3.4 GHz. This performance is hard to overlook. Unfortunately, many elements of construction are controversial and affect top experience that should give us a VAIO Z. When it opened, ultra-portable is based on the lower side of the screen. On it are two narrow rubbers feet, which should prevent slipping on your desk. Unfortunately, the rubber is hard and grip. Depending on the material of which it is built, the Sony VAIO Z can slip very easily.

Performance

Core i7-2620M processor of the present configuration is approximately 20% in 3DMark Vantage performance specific tests. In combination with a 256 GB SSD with two memory controllers put in RAID 0 configuration manages to score exceptionally well at productivity the test PCMark Vantage.
